This week's comic:
Avengers Academy #1...

So, everyone knows that a few years ago Nick Fury secretly went around rounding up some of the most powerful teens in the world who were just starting to show signs of having powers. These kids were molded into his Secret Warriors, who made their debut during Secret Invasion. Secret Warriors has been one of our favorite under the radar books since it launched.

So, what does this have to do with Avengers Academy? Well, it turns out Norman Osborn liked Nick Fury's idea so much that he decided to try the same thing. The difference is that he's Norman, so he did evil Norman things. When the kids weren't performing at the level Norman expected, he started in with the torture. This left the group...damaged, to say the least.

The Avengers decide that each of these kids has the potential to be the next Dr. Doom or Green Goblin if they aren't reformed and watched closely. A group of mentors is put together to set the kids straight. I don't think the cast of mentors could be any better. Speedball and Quicksilver were enough to have me hooked. It's a perfect cast of characters who have been down the darker path and want to help keep these kids from going bad.

If the idea of a hand picked Norman Osborn group of super villain recruits being reformed by Penance and Quicksilver isn't enough to get you to check out the first issue, what will? Prancing puppies, maybe?

LOST is done, what now?

Rise of the Eldrazi Launch Party

Next week marks the release of the new Magic set, Rise of the Eldrazi, and we’re all pretty pumped here at the Comic Swap! To celebrate the release of the new set, we’ll be holding a big launch party here at the store on Saturday, April 24, starting at 1:30 pm!

The main event will be a sealed deck tournament. Ideal for new players and those who are unfamiliar with a set, a sealed deck tournament offers new and experienced players alike a fun way to get to know a new expansion set. Unlike a booster draft, in a sealed deck tournament you will be given six boosters to open and build a deck from. Your card pool is whatever you’ve opened in your six boosters, and you’ll take the cards you open home with you.

For $25 you’ll get six boosters, and everyone will go home with an alternate art Lord of Shatterskull Pass created just for the launch party events. And there will be plenty of prizes to give out, too, so if you play well, you just may go home with even more!

We’re hoping (and expecting) a very large turnout, so please let us know if you plan to attend. We’ll hold spaces for as many people as we can, but if you absolutely want to guarantee a space, I’d recommend paying in advance. You can call in with your payment or stop by and pay in advance.

So here’s the skinny:

Please arrive at or around 1:00 pm. We will open the six packs at 1:30pm and begin forming our decks. You will have 30 minutes to build your deck. The first matches will begin at 2 o’clock. Each round will be one hour long. We’ll do as many rounds as are required based on the number of players who show up; this will probably be five rounds if twenty-four people enroll. We’re also going to adjust the prizes to the amount of people who show up, scaling from a $15 gift card for first place if it’s very small to a $45 gift card for first place if it gets up to 24 players.

So that about sums it up! Please let us know if you plan to attend, as I’ve got a feeling we’re going to run out of space! Email us at info@comicswap.biz to reserve your seat.

Blackest Night Contest Winners!

The DC comics event of the year came to a close last Wednesday with 'Blackest Night #8', which means it is time to announce the winners of our Blackest Night Ring contest. We had lots of great submissions and it was a very tough decision.

American Vampire

I just read issue #1 of this the other day and was seriously blown away folks!

This is a brand new Stephen King written work done specially for this comic series. American Vampire is a new Vertigo Comic ongoing series with each issue containing 2 stories, one set in the 1920's during the infancy of the silent film era and the other during the late 1800's on the Western frontier. Series creator Scott Snyder writes the first and Stephen King pens the second story in each of the first 5 issues, with series artist Rafael Alburquerque illustrating both in differing styles. It's about vampires. Plain and simple. But the hook is that it's about the evolution of vampires. Each story is connected and has a main character who is the kick-start of a new step on the evolutionary ladder, the American Vampire. Meet outlaw Skinner Sweet and struggling Hollywood actress Pearl Jones as only the master of horror can write them.

Comic Swap Super Bowl (2/7/10) Booster Draft

We will be hosting two Zendikar/Worldwake booster drafts on Sunday, February 7th at the Comic Swap. Both drafts will have an eight person limit. The first draft will be at 12:00 pm and the second at 3:00 pm. The entry fee is twelve dollars, which includes the three boosters needed (2 Zendikar and 1 Worldwake) and prizes. Everyone will keep the decks that they build during the draft.

Prizes Include:
First Place: $15 Store Credit
Second Place: $5 Store Credit
All Participants will receive a limited edition foil promo card
Addition door prizes will be given out at random

If you would like to participate you need to RSVP immediately. Please let us know which time slot you prefer, but we cannot guarantee a seat. We will email you back confirming your seat and time slot. Plan on arriving at least fifteen minutes early (11:45am or 2:45pm), so that we can start on time. If you have additional basic land that you can bring, please do so! It will be a huge help.

Blackest Night Ring Contest of Champions to the Max: Rules Edition

By now we hope you're all excited about our Blackest Night Contest. Not familiar with the contest? Click the link and we'll wait for you.

While those noobs are reading about the contest, let's get a head start on the rules so you folks who've been in the know all along can get started. Here are the rules for the Blackest Night Contest:

Rule Number 1:
Don't hurt anyone or do anything illegal to get your pictures. Just thought we'd cover that base and get it out of the way.
Rule Number 2:
One contest entry per person. Feel free to send in as many pictures as you'd like, but only one can be your contest entry. If you send multiple pictures, please indicate which one you'd like us to judge you based on.
Rule Number 2.5:
Forgot about this when I first wrote up the rules. All seven rings in the spectrum (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet) must be in the picture. You do not have to use the black ring, as we did not know we would be doing the contest when they originally came out. You will not receive extra consideration for using the black ring to be fair to the other contestants (though feel free to use it if it fits!)
Rule Number 3:
You must indicate whether we can publish your picture on our blog and/or future website. If you're not comfortable with your picture on the internet, you must let us know when you submit your picture or we'll just put it right up. Which leads me to:
Rule Number 3 Corollary A:
If you win the contest, we will post your picture up on our blog and/or website. Please understand that if you win, your picture will be made public.
Rule Number 4:
Please submit your picture as a jpeg or gif file. You can e-mail it to the store directly or send a link to your personal webspace where we can find the picture.
Rule Number 5:
You may use anything you want to alter, edit, or prettify your pictures. Photoshop? Sure. Stickers? Knock yourself out. Costumes? All the better. Have fun, be creative, we're looking forward to it.
Rule Number 6:
This is more a warning than a rule, so allow me to readjust.

Warning Number 1:
The Comic Swap staff will judge your pictures based solely on our opinions and taste. There will be no logic to this. We can't promise to judge your piece based on composition, clever use of negative space, and knowledge of photographic technique. Probably we're just going to pick the one that's awesomest. Apparently awesomest isn't a word. Who knew?

This week's comic:

Underground, a comic by Jeff Parker (Agent of Atlas) and Steve Lieber (Whiteout) from Image Comics.

We've all read comics where super people do super things, where crazy mad scientists try to destroy the world, or where strange alien human hybrid sea monsters use extravagant guns to rip holes through the fabric of time and space in an effort to stave off the eventual depletion of the Earth's natural resources... This is not such a comic. Though sea monsters are friggin' sweet, so here's a picture of one. Don't worry, I'll still do cute puppies later.

Underground is a comic about two park rangers trying to stop the local cave systems from being turned into a tourist attraction. One in particular is an avid caver who is trying to turn public opinion away from quick cash and towards the awesome that the caves can provide. But some people are very, very eager to get started on making the caves accessible for anyone who wants to take a look inside.

And if all of that sounds less than exciting, allow me to reassure you: Guns and explosions. Underground ones.

This is definitely comics done right. Great art, great writing, and a very intriguing, original concept really make this book stand out. I love the use of color in the story. When the characters are inside of the cave, everything takes on sort of sepia tones, adding an ominous feel to everything they do.

So without further ado...

In this week's installment, we'll be taking a look at...

The Batman/Doc Savage special from DC Comics. This one shot is a pulp throwback team-up story written by Brian Azzarello and penciled by Phil Noto. Azzarello is one of our favorite crime writers (100 Bullets, Filthy Rich). This won't be his first time taking on the caped crusader either. His OGN, Joker, was a huge hit last year and before that he wrote a terrific Batman arc called Broken City.

This special will team up Batman with the classic pulp character, Doc Savage. Expect Azzarello to push the envelope with this story and take the dark knight places that not every fan will be happy about. If Frank Miller's Batman wielding a gun bothered you, than you might not be thrilled with the places this book is going to go. We had a chance to listen to Azzarello talk about the project at a retailer summit a few weeks ago and he got all of us really pumped for the book. He plans to show a Batman that is more like the early Batman of the pulp era. If you have ever read any of the early Batman stories (maybe in the Batman Chronicles collections), you'll know that he was a pretty different character back then.

The best part about this special is that it is a prelude to the upcoming First Wave miniseries by Azzarello and Rags Morales. The miniseries will explore Azzarello's vision of a dark and shadowy DCU, where the line between hero and criminal is hard to distinguish and nobody is sure who to trust. We had a chance to see some preview pages from First Wave at our summit and they looked phenomenal! Rags and Azzarello make an amazing team and I think that book has a ton of potential.

If you don't mind seeing a new spin on some of your favorite classics, you will definitely love this book. We'll leave you with an awesome photo of Rags Morales' cover for the special:

Killing is Easy; the Hard Part is Forgiving

This week's column is dedicated to:

Absolution #2 from Avatar Press by Christos Gage and Roberto Viacava.³ Absolution is a comic book about a superhero that decides to take the law (and criminals' lives) into his own hands. But it wouldn't be worth reading if it didn't handle the subject matter differently than other books that have done similar things in the past⁴, and Absolution certainly does that. In this book, our superhero is fully sanctioned by (and works hand in hand with) the police. He wears a badge, he fills out paperwork, he goes to trials...in short he sees all the ins and outs of the justice system, and he's fed up. After watching too many criminals walk free, he decides to take the law into his own hands and watches a criminal die. And he likes it.

Absolution is about a serial killer who also happens to be a cop and a superhuman. Comparisons to Dexter and Irredeemable are inevitable, but what you'll find in Absolution is a compelling, well-written, well-drawn book about a truly conflicted man who wanted to make the world better and found it just a bit too soul-crushing to see the worst in people day in and out. This is only the second issue; the first issue (and the brief, cheap, prequel issue) are available and on our shelves if you'd like a primer. Check it out!

Jessica Abel Visits the Swap This Thursday!

Jessica Abel (La Perdida, Drawing Words and Writing Pictures, Life Sucks) will be visiting State College this Thursday (October 8th). She will be giving a lecture in Foster Auditorium on campus at 4 o'clock.

After the lecture, Jessica will be signing her books at the Swap from 7:00-8:00 p.m. We'll have plenty of copies of La Perdida and some of her other books, as well. Make sure to stop down and say hi!

The Secret Best Comic Ever

Every week, we send out our amazing newsletter¹ that outlines everything coming in to our store, some exciting comic news, and any important information the Swap needs to let you know. Additionally, every week, we highlight some of the incoming items that we are particularly excited about. These are usually items we love, though sometimes they're just items we're excited about or items we think our customers will be excited about.² Every now and then, someone asks us why we recommend what we recommend. This new addition to the Comic Swap blog will provide exactly that service.

We highlight and recommend a lot of comics each week, but to be honest, the one that pops out to me as potentially surprising from this week's newsletter is:

GI Joe Cobra Special #1 from IDW comics, written by Mike Costa with art by Antonio Fuso. You may not realize this³, but the GI Joe Cobra miniseries was the secret best comic of the summer. Reading more like Queen & Country or Sleeper than a typical GI Joe comic, the book featured spies, hidden motives, sleeper agents, and tricky decisions. Over the course of the five issue miniseries, we become acquainted with Chuckles, a member of the GI Joe who has gone deep undercover to infiltrate a criminal, terrorist organization called Cobra that no one really knows anything about.

I don't really know anything about GI Joe. I imagine if I did, I'd be excited by the in-references present throughout the series. These things are not the point of the comic. The point of the comic is awesome.

The special is a follow-up to the series, a comic supposedly focusing on the villain⁴ as secretly revealed in issue 4 or so of the original mini. So I wouldn't necessarily recommend picking up the special if you haven't read the original series.

What I would recommend doing is pre-ordering₅ the trade paperback collection, which should come out sometime in the next month or so. It'll have the whole series in one book, including the special that is coming out this week. It's your chance to read the whole thing in one go.

Labor Day Holiday Shipping Schedule

As is usually the case when a holiday falls on a Monday, comics will be shipping on a 24 hour delay. So here is the lowdown on the Comic Swap hours for the week of Labor Day:

Monday September 7th - CLOSED for HOLIDAY
Tuesday September 8th- 10am to 5pm Regular Hours
Wednesday September 9th - 10am to 5pm - NEW COMICS DELAYED 24 HOURS
Thursday September 10th- 3pm to 7pm - NEW COMIC DAY!!
Friday September 11th- 10am to 7pm - Return to Regular Hours

Kris here. In the past few days I've been busy grading, bagging, and pricing up hundreds of old comics from the 50s and 60s, getting them into our computer system so they can be put out for sale and you too can marvel at the old westerns, romance, war, and funny animal books. These are all pretty inexpensive reading copies in very good or lesser shape but man are they ever fun to look thru. It was a different era that's for sure! Take these 2 ads for example...
These are back cover ads for multinational agricultural biotechnology corporation Monsanto touting new plastic toys. They don't make the toys...they just make the amazing new plastic the toys are made from and they are urging comic book reading kids to bug the crap out of their parents to race to the store to buy them. I wonder how many of these kids are now older adults with problems stemming from toxins in all those wonderful new plastics. In the age of innocence that was the 50's and 60's nothing could possibly be wrong with this amazing new plastics technology in the hands and mouths of kids. Sigh!

Wednesday Highlight "Strange Tales #1"

Wow. With all the fantastic books that came out today (Northlanders, Ultimate Spider-Man, Chew, Sweet Tooth, etc...) it's really hard to pick one highlight, but Strange Tales is definitely near the top of the list.

This anthology style comic collects short stories featuring Marvel characters written and illustrated by some of the hottest creators from the "indie" comic scene (Paul Pope, James Kolchalka, Peter Bagge, and Johnny Ryan just to name a few!) These creators were given free rein to do what they pleased with all of our beloved Marvel heroes.

If you love indie comics, you will love this book for its incredible style and writing. It's also a blast to see these amazing creators working in such a different environment.

If you love superhero comics, you will love this book for all the outrageous situations it puts your favorite characters in. Some of the favorites around the Swap were Lockjaw trying to open his dog food, Wolverine throwing a jealous temper tantrum, and Bruce Banner having some trouble in the kitchen.
